Jude Turner is a mum of one living in the Hanover area of Brighton and running her own award winning covered button and vintage business, Jessie Jumbles.
Tell us about your kids? I have one four year old son called Arthur who’s currently at nursery in the mornings. I’m married to Will and live high up in the Hanover hills. My husband is a train driver so works shifts, this is sometimes a good thing as he gets to see Arthur in the afternoons but is often working at weekends. My mum lives locally and is a brilliant help.
Tell us about your partner/ family/ support network? My husband is a train driver so works shifts, this is sometimes a good thing as he gets to see Arthur in the afternoons but is often working at weekends. My mum lives locally and is a brilliant help but we have to juggle family life around hospital visiting hours as my sister, a brilliant Auntie has been in hospital for the majority of the last two years. My in laws are in Haywards Heath and they help when they can.
Are you Brighton born and bred? No I am a Londoner. I grew up in South London, Wimbledon and lived in various flat in south west London before moving to Brighton when I met my husband.
What’s the best thing about being a parent in the city? There’s lots of outdoor space as we have the beach and the downs on our doorstep. Brighton is a very child friendly city.
Tell us about your favourite place in Brighton & Hove city? My favourite place to look at is Embassy Court as I’m a huge Art Deco fan. Arthur and I love going out to Rock n Rola diner for milkshakes.
What’s your favourite Brighton memory? My wedding day, driving along the coast road bathed in sunshine in a 1955 Vauxhall Vectra to Shoreham airport.
What do you love doing in your spare time? I rarely have any time off. It may sound tragic but I love what I do and spend any snatched free moments working on my business. This thankfully does include car booting and charity shopping as I also sell children’s vintage and the whole family loves a rummage and bargain hunting so we all go!
Tell us about your business or work? I create covered button accessories with a nostalgic feel. Handmade in Britain and inspired by Enid Blyton, the great British seaside, childhood, days gone by and the nature and cities of our little island. We also sell children’s vintage including books, annuals and toys. Last year we were chosen as a winner of Small Business Sunday by Theo Paphitis of Dragons Den. We were excited to be chosen for another online Women in Business award by Jacqueline Gold, the MD of Knickerbox and Ann Summers last week. It was fantastic to have my hard work recognised by such inspiring entrepreneurs. We also put on events and are bringing our Marvellous Market to Brighton on the 15th March, full of handmade and vintage stalls, pop up tearoom and face painting for the kids. Hope to see you there!
