‘A story telling tent for children under the age of five is to be set up in Jubilee Library from Monday 10 January until Wednesday 12 January. This is to help make storytelling fun and encourage regular reading.’
Well when one half of Brighton Mums saw this and also happens to have a Wednesday off to spend with her little one Miss Fizz we had to go.
We’ve been finding it difficult to get out of the house with the cold and wet weather and our love of books meant the library would be a fantastic place to start. We arrived early to ensure a good comfy sofa but unfortunately Fizz’s attention span and new found walking skills meant that I was chasing her around the library picking up the aftermath of a pulling books of the shelf session. However, not once did the staff or the fantastic storytellers bat an eyelid at this. In fact it made me feel quite relaxed that I could let Fizz wander around discovering the children’s library. The stories were about 10-15 minutes long, short enough to keep most children’s attention span.
The project is being led by early year’s teachers from our Ethnic Minority Achievement Service (EMAS) who will be telling stories as part of the ‘Every Child a Talker’ initiative. This initiative is a national project designed to develop the language and communication of young children and promote the importance of using language at an early age - giving children the best possible start in literacy.
Jubilee Library boasts a dads baby boogie every second Saturday of the month and a story time every Wednesday. Both start at 10:15am and you can be sure we’ll be exploring books again there soon!
