Recently I discovered a brand new insurance product on the market targeting a niche that could mean that parents have one less thing to worry about when a child is seriously ill or has an accident. ChildMax pays your salary for 12 months should a parent be forced to take unpaid leave from a job or their own business.
The other week I saw a post on Facebook from a friend. She was raising money for some close friends who had a poorly child. The family was forced to take time off work unpaid to support the child’s treatment plan and were struggling to meet their bills. The uncertainty of the prognosis and the length of treatment time were very worrying for the parents but it was amazing to see people rallying round, chipping in money to help them.
Earlier this year our youngest had to go into hospital, as an infected spot on her eye had gotten dangerously large and the doctors were concerned about the impact on the cornea. Being self-employed, I had to put projects on hold, move meetings around and just hope my clients understood. We were fortunate my husband could take emergency leave from his job and that my daughter was home after two nights. Of course it’s important to say in our situation we would not have been able to make a claim with ChildMax but it was a worrying time and made me think about families who deal with serial hospital visits and treatment plans.
When I came across ChildMax, at the What’s On 4 awards in June this year, I had a really interesting discussion with Max the founder. It was precisely experiences like these Facebook parents which drove him to set this product up. What’s more the policy is available for self-employed parents and is surprisingly affordable. For example, a parent with two young children with a £1,800 take home salary per month would expect to pay £106 (inc. IPT) for the annual insurance policy.
I will admit my husband and I are not particularly organised when it comes to sensible insurance arrangements for the more darker, more challenging aspects of life such as serious illness. I have all my appliances covered (especially the dishwasher) but don’t have life insurance yet. But I’ve worked hard to build my business up and although money, bills etc are the last things you will think about if your child was seriously ill, it would really be one less thing to think about. Meaning I could devote my love and energy towards the treatment or healing process.
So bravo to game changers in the industry who are truly putting parents at the heart of their product development. And may we see more products with this kind of thinking on the market!
