Home Styling: Nursery Essentials

There is so much to prepare when expecting a new baby – not least creating a space for your little one. One general piece of advice is to avoid going for a ‘nursery’ décor scheme, as the baby’s first years will speed by, quickly outgrowing an overly youthful theme. But what else should you consider when decorating a nursery room?

The essentials

Sufficient storage space is vital in a nursery. A chest of drawers will use the same space as a wardrobe, but will be far more useful for baby clothes and bedding. A dresser/changer combo is an ideal space-saver, and many models come in a simple neutral white.

Cots are sadly only suitable for all-too-short a time, meaning parents find themselves shelling out on a new bed when their youngster outgrows the crib. Again, a better option might be an item that combines both cot and bed, or one that can be converted as your child grows. Try to stock up on plenty of bedding made from natural fibres, as well as a waterproof mattress cover.

A comfy armchair or rocking chair takes up minimal space when placed in a corner, and provides an excellent resting spot for nursing and cuddling the little one.

Themes and colours

Blue or pink are classic nursery colours, but they tend to look outdated when used in a strict ‘girl’- or ‘boy’- themed room. Break the mould and use a pale duck-egg blue for either sex. Traditionally blues were associated with innocence – perfect for a newborn! Alternatively, pale green tones look fresh, and are associated with growth and new life.

Youthful wallpaper and friezes will only be appropriate for so long, and your child will quickly outgrow many of the designs available. Instead, liven up painted walls with bunting and fairy lights – these are easily changed or removed as your child matures. Similarly, a neutral-toned carpet can be personalised with a stylish, bright rug.
