70s Parenting: What Was It Really Like?

In this month’s Sussex Style magazine I interview my own mother and Suzanne Borrell from Baby Expo UK and What’s On 4 with her mum to get an idea of what parenting was like in the 70s.

70s parenting. Was it really much simpler?

Both Suzanne and I are children of the 70s. Yes, we weren’t afraid to reveal our age for this piece and both enjoyed quizzing our mums about the methods they use to bring us up. Our focus was the birth to five years; the gadgets (or lack thereof), careers, childcare and how our mums feel about parenting today.

The buggies were smaller but the nappies were bulkier. There was no maternity leave, so work was mostly off the table until the kids were older. But all our mums believe that made motherhood simpler and more enjoyable in some ways. However when it came to the range of baby activities and tech devices for young kids, opinions were slightly different among our mums. Suzanne and her mum, Hilde, feeling there was too much stimulation for little ones but my mum wishing there had been more activities on offer when I was a child.
