10 Reasons We Love A Brighton Summer Staycation

To add our voice to the gazillions of Brighton listicles, we thought it’s high time we wrote one. We think Brighton is a dream destination for a UK summer staycation and here’s our top 10 reasons why.

  1. The weather. Though our neighbours in Eastbourne can scientifically claim to be one of the sunniest destinations in the South, Brighton isn’t too far behind. Bring a jacket though because ‘sunny’ doesn’t always mean warm but it does mean happy.
  2. Getting your feet wet. On a hot muggy day, the sea isn’t the only thing we have to cool off in. There are kids paddling pools at Saunders Park, Kings Road and Hove Lagoon plus awesome fountains at The Level park. For the complete summer holiday experience try Pell’s Pool in Lewes.
  3. The quiet spots on the beach. Yes they do exist but we are a bit reluctant to share them. Let’s just say, head towards beaches nearer to the edge of the city’s coastline border with West and East Sussex.
  4. Craft beers and sea air. Despite the seafront being taken over by hen and stag parties in the summer, you still can’t beat sitting outside Brighton Music Hall, listening to some mellow tunes (check out my talented neighbour Carla who performs regularly). In Brighton has gone alfresco bonkers in recent years with smarter beach terraces and pavement cafes offering a wide variety of drinks and cuisine.
  5. Mahoosive parks. We’re not short of green spaces all over the city but we also have some mega parks, which are only a short bus ride away. You can find a small corner for a bit of relative peace in Sheepcote Valley and East Brighton Park plus the ever-popular Stanmer Park. Plus we’re right on the edge of the South Downs National Park, plenty of places to get lost there!
  6. Open top buses. Have the wind give you a demi-wave as you take the open double decker bus to Devil’s Dyke while wincing as the bus makes its way up country lanes. There’s space enough for ball games with a view, a pub lunch and ice cream waiting for you at this mythological landmark.
  7. Brighton Pride. Where the city stands loud and proud, shoulder-to-shoulder reminding everyone who lives and visits the city welcomes all. The parade is worth staying in town for and if you don’t fancy getting tickets to the festival in Preston Park, there’s plenty of fringe activities in local pubs and bars.
  8. Sunset on the pier. After the kids have worn themselves out with an unlimited rides wristband pass, grab some chips and watch the sun go down over Brighton. The amusements and some food kiosks are open till around 9pm or later, so leave room for Belgian style waffles or crepes.
  9. Gelato. Now, I’m not knocking a traditional seaside Mr Whippy but in Brighton we are completely spoiled for choice when it comes to hipster ice cream. Salted caramel, vegan brownie, pistachio washed down with a locally roasted black filter coffee.
  10. No sand. People bang on about how awkward the stones on the beach but get yourself some decent fold up chairs or sun mats and you don’t notice. You never get sand in your sarnies or undies after a picnic and paddle.

Did we miss something off the list? Where’s your favourite place to hang out in the summer in Brighton?
