What is craniosacral therapy?
Sophie Wills is a fully insured and registered Craniosacral Therapist working in Brighton. She works with all ages and conditions to
facilitate physical and emotional well being, including pregnancy and post-birth. With a background in art, extensive travel and a committed journey towards personal development, her approach is intuitive, open minded and compassionate, believing that health is always present underlying the snowstorm of day to day living. Here she tells us more about what craniosacral therapy is…
What does a treatment feel like?
How do you understand the words craniosacral therapy? Did you think it was just to do with the head? Or dId you perhaps think it involved massage?
These are the two most common misconceptions which I also shared before my first taster treatment several years ago. Wow, you can imagine how surprised I was when I experiences a myriad of sensations in all different parts of my body from only the lightest, feather-like touch on my feet by my practitioner after only ten minutes! I didn’t realise at the time, but this was my body literally waking up to health and alignment with universal energy!
It was as if all the areas which were tense or had been sleeping due to postural habits, emotional issues or physical injury were, during this session, being shown a guiding light towards balance and health and the body’s own intelligence and ability to heal itself….it was amazing, as if all different areas of my body were saying ” Hey don’t forget me! And me! And me!” Sometimes I was feeling fluidy waves up my legs, heat tingling up my spine or random sparks of light. My body was literally reorganising itself from the inside out. The most incredible thing was that you would expect this to feel a bit uncomfortable or disconcerting, however, the opposite was true – I had an awareness of all this happening while I was in the most deepest, profound state of relaxation! I felt like a was floating on a lilo bobbing along in the blue sparkelly sea in the sunshine next to my favourite beach without a care in the world! At other times as if I was deliciously melting into the massage couch, spread across the landscape out to the farthest most edges of the horizon…and sometimes even beyond! I would describe it as a completely holistic treat for body, mind and soul!
Maybe it was my then recent years of yoga and meditation practice, or my attunement to Reiki 1 and 2 years before, that enabled me to sink so deeply and experience so much in the first session. Or, perhaps after spending the best part of three years in India it was divine timing, but from that first taster I knew not only that I wanted more of this feeling but that I was also more fascinated than I had been in a long time! Shortly after, following many synchronistic random meetings with people involved with the work in one way or another, I began my two year training towards being a fully qualified craniosacral practitioner.
Through my work with clients, and continuing to have regular craniosacral treatments myself, I have learnt that every session is really unique and experiences can vary greatly from client to client and day to day.
Sometimes I feel recharged and rejuvenated after receiving treatment, sometimes I feel the need to rest and stay in a quiet relaxed state for the rest of the day, either way is pleasant and pretty much without fail I have a really good night’s sleep! One of my clients actually said she had felt her whole life becoming more authentic since having regular sessions.
Craniosacral therapy tunes into the natural rhythm of the body, largely through focus on the fluid, dissolving tension and blockages and encouraging health, balance and increased flow and vitality. It can help with almost any condition on all levels, physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally, to enhance wellbeing. It is suitable for all ages and is also fantastic during pregnancy as it is so safe and gentle.
