Christmas is one of those rare events which seems to hold a mysteriously unifying quality; an ability to bring people from all walks of life together to celebrate and enjoy time with family, friends and ideally a couple of days off work!
There is nothing more indicative of this unification than Christmas music. Love it or hate it (most of us claim to hate it while jauntily humming along to carols), Christmas music is the one genre which has the power to persuade ardent fans of artists as diverse as Bach and the Beatles, Taylor Swift and T-Rex, to forget their musical differences, link arms and enjoy a good old festive sing along.
If you’re yet to plan you’re Christmas playlist this year, here are a few recommendations which will unite your family in rapturous chorus as you progress through the day.
To ease you through the early start
It’s 5.30am and the kids are bouncing; their small frames are struggling to contain the excitement, so you need the perfect antidote to quieten everything down just a little while you warm to the day. ‘It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas’, is the classic you need. Whether it’s the Bing Crosby or Perry Como version, the apt lyrics and gentle beat will soothe you into life.
Present opening time!
There’s no use fighting the excitement now; this is where it peaks; gaskets may be blown, but console yourself that this mayhem occurs only once a year. Let’s hit them with ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’, and watch them dance with unbridled mirth as they see the mountain of presents the corpulent festive fellow has left them.
When you’ve spent what feels like weeks in the kitchen, make sure the feast you have so lovingly prepared is properly enjoyed. Some traditional carols provide the perfect musical backdrop to the main event. ‘I Saw Three Ships’, ‘Little Drummer Boy’ and ‘We Three Kings’ hark back to Christmases of yore, allowing for a little nostalgia, whilst not distracting from the food.
That’s enough music for one day. It has been scientifically proven that too much Christmas music makes you go mad. That means it’s time to get started with the films! Enhance your viewing experience with some Bose speakers and settle down with a glass of wine. After all, you’ve earnt it!
