How To Be Kind To Your Skin This Winter

I love Winter. It’s an excuse to wear chunky knitware and coats like cocoons plus wear the most outrageous party make-up. But it can be harsh on the skin, especially on your face. As busy mums we don’t have time to carry out intensive beauty routines, so here’s a few quick tricks that could save time & money.

The mini-facial: treat yourself to a nice facial scrub and ask for 30 minutes in the bath. Stick some essential oils in a bowl nearby, stick on some soothing tunes and exfoliate away. If you have time, stick on a 5-10 minutes mask after exfoliating. Doing this at least once a week can help skin feel healthy, glow and be a great base for party make-up.

Always take off your make-up: in my view, make-up wipes aren’t enough. Even though they are quick and perfect for busy mums, not all brands remove the make-up entirely. Investing in a foaming facial cleanser and a few extra minutes before bed to wash your face helps remove more of the make-up and impurities. Beats trying to do it in the morning when the kids are awake and ready for action!

5 a Day and Twice a Day: central heating, biting winds, winter can be punishing for your skin. As well as drinking plenty of water and eating your 5 a day, moisturising morning and evening helps hydrate your skin and protect against these winter attacks. Finding a product that matches your skin type is so important, so shop around and always ask for samples before you spend a lot of money. Most reputable companies should let you try before you buy. Consider using an anti-ageing cream to help prevent the signs of ageing.

Get a good night’s sleep: easy to say get plenty of sleep when you’re a mum, especially with small children. If you’re breastfeeding, you’ll be comforted to know that both mum and baby product the hormones cholecystokinin (CCK) which helps the body relax and get off to sleep again once the feed is winding down. It’s tempting to stay up and have some ‘mum-time’ when the kids have gone to sleep but getting an early night can decrease stress and equip mind & body to deal with the challenges of the next day.
