From Public Enemy to CBeebies: Our Week In Brighton
Brighton is being treated to some great events for parents and kids alike this week in Brighton, starting with Public Enemy at The Dome tonight (for parents!) then Sid’s Show tomorrow morning at The Old Market (for both!).
I’ll make a confession. In 1987 when Public Enemy thrust onto the music scene with their militant rap I was listening to Johnny Hates Jazz. It’s not to say I didn’t like rap & hop-hop, I adored the mainstream hits in the early 80′s, Erik B & Rakim, Grandmaster Flash and the Sugar Hill Gang but by the time I reached 13 years of age, I was swooning over clean-cut frontmen and learning song lyrics by heart. Thanks to a friend who has several brothers, all listening to an eclectic range of heavy music, I was given a mix tape with said loud music, I was smitten with the energy & passion of acts like Public Enemy. Of course the question on everyone’s lips last week but nowhere to be found in cyberspace, is will Flavor Flav be in the line-up after his recent arrest? But rest assured he has crossed the pond, performing in their set at the Relentless Festival in London on Saturday night.
Come Tuesday morning, I’ll be ditching my plans for ‘the revolution’ to take the kids to see Sid Sloane from CBeebies’ new show – Sid’s Show (how did you guess?). Sid has been a fixture of CBeebies since 2002, quitting stockbroking to pursue a career in acting. Following some of his CBeebies colleagues, he now has his own touring show with dates all over the country. We’ve been invited to the official premier in Brighton tomorrow and the little ones are suitably excited.
The premise of the show is to follow Sid as he sets out on an heroic quest to find out where in the world his favourite socks and shoes have gone. Meet an array of funny characters and discover plenty of surprises plus share in adventures to the bottom of the ocean, deep jungle and outer space. The show is interactive is crammed with games, songs, magic guaranteed to put a smile on faces.
Sid has also got exciting news CBeebies launches a new show, ‘Let’s Play’ to be presented by Sid. The series inspires pre-schoolers to discover the world through creative role-play and dressing-up. Due to air on CBeebies later this year, ‘Let’s Play’ will be co-presented by newcomer Rebecca Keatley.
