Luc Besson’s first film in the English language, Léon (known outside the UK as Léon: The Professional), a spiritual successor to Nikita in that it also revolves around a young girl training to be an assassin, as well as expanding Jean Reno’s brief role as ‘The Cleaner.’

Jean Reno stars as the titular hitman who, outside of being a gun for hire, leads a very reclusive life in his New York apartment, with pastimes such as watching old Gene Kelly musicals, drinking milk and watering his houseplant. However, he is one day forced to befriend and protect his young neighbour Mathilda, an astounding breakout performance from twelve-year-old Natalie Portman, whose entire family are wiped out in a drug-related murder carried out by a corrupt DEA agent, played by Gary Oldman in one his best over-the-top, scenery-eating villain roles. As the only survivor of the slaying, Mathilda seeks revenge and retribution for the killings. After hiding out with Léon she quickly discovers what he really does for a living, and asks to be trained in the art of assassination. He reluctantly but eventually accepts in exchange for reading lessons and Mathilda’s offer to do his laundry.

With a tense and atmospheric score composed by Besson regular Éric Serra, along with some breathtaking action sequences and set pieces, Léon has long endured as one of the director’s best films; ultra stylish and suspenseful, coupled with dark humour and a tough yet sympathetic performance from Reno in the film’s title role.

“Oozing style, wit and confidence from every sprocket, and offering a dizzyingly, fresh perspective on the Big Apple that only Besson could bring, this is, in a word, wonderful.” Mark Salisbury, EMPIRE
